St Roch’s welcomed amateur side, Haldane United to James McGrory park for the first pre season match, of the 2015-16 season. Haldane are a very well known and ambitious club, with teams from Under 13 all the way up to amateur, playing in Saturday and Sunday leagues, with a fantastic reputation for playing good football, so the fans who made the trip were due some a good match.
John Stark, Kenny Jarvis and the returning TJ McCluskey all made their debuts, whilst Max Neossi, Graeme McWilliams, Darren Simpson and Bob, all joined the match squad as trialists.
The home side, controlled the early stages, so much so, that Baboucarr Mussa gave the Roch an early lead. With only 8 minutes on the clock, a nice move which started with James McKnight, saw new boy Jarvis, swing a great ball over the top to Mussa. The big forward cut in to the box wide on the left, a one two with McCluskey, saw the big man free on the keeper, an with a floated finish, opened the scoring. Haldane to their credit came flying back into the match, and it wasn’t long before they were back in the match, or so they thought. As the forward came crashing to the ground, it was seemingly a certain penalty was denied and the forward saw himself booked for diving. The Candy, relieved at the decision, punished the amateur side, soon after. Paul Roan linked well with Jarvis, before floating a ball over the defence for Jordan Logan. Last seasons top goalscorer, battled off 2 defenders, before settling himself to smash in the second. Haldane again, played themselves back into the match, but didn’t do enough to test Stark in nets.
After the break, the play was very much even , however, it was St Roch’s who like the first half, opened the scoring. Jarvis with another fantastic ball, allowed Logan to run in from the left on the keeper. His shot was well stopped however the ball broke to an on running Paul Roan who fired in. As with friendlies, the game started to break up as the substitutes started to roll. Stark, Neossi, McKnight, Roan, Mark Mathieson, McCluskey, Logan and Keiran Martin all left the field in the second half, replaced by Brian Haynes, Stephen Bryson, John Connor, Daryl Naismith, Chris McFadyen, Graeme McWilliams, Bob and Darren Simpson and it was Haynes and Simpson who played their part in keeping the clean sheet and adding to the scoreline. Haynes made 3 great late saves as Haldane pressed late in the game, whilst Darren Simpson showed the crowd what he could do as he smashed in the fourth goal, late in the day. Cutting in to find space at the edge of the box, the former Candy player, smashed in an unstoppable shot to finish the scoring on the day.
Summary : A good workout for the lads. Haldane are a good footballing team, and both teams played at times, some very entertaining stuff.
