Broomhill Sports Club Under 21s were next up for St Roch’s in a pre season friendly on Thursday night.
In changes from Monday nights win vs Dennistoun, Brian Haynes replaced Stephen Mather in nets, whilst the defence lined up James McKnight, Brian Henderson, Max Neossi and Liam McMahon, Jordan Logan, Darryl Naismith, Darren Simpson and Marc McDonnell started in midfield, whilst Baboucarr Musa and TJ McCluskey were up top.
Graeme McWilliams, Mather, Stephen Bryson, Mark Mathieson, Robert Maguire and Keiran Martin started on the bench.
Unlike the recent matches, St Roch’s started pretty slowly as BSC gave as good as they got in the early stages. The match was very evenly balanced, until a forced change, made a major impact on the match proceedings. Logan, pulled up around the 15minute mark, and Martin joined the match, with Naismith being moved over to the right to accommodate as the midfield reshuffled. The change paid off almost instantaneously as only four minutes later, St Roch’s grab the opener.
McDonnells closing down, paid off as his tackle just inside the BSC half, broke to Musa with his back to goal. His run across the goal, was matched by a clipped ball into the box, allowed Naismith to run in on the keeper, under pressure, but finished well for the opener.
The young away side, weren’t out of the match despite the goal, and tested the Roch keeper in nets only 3 minutes later. A crossed ball is only cleared to the edge of the Roch box, which was smashed back in low by the BSC No.8, which Haynes excellently tipped round the post. The resultant corner was headed to the back post but wide with Haynes beaten.
On the 27 minute, the Candy doubled the lead. Haynes found time to do a few keepy ups to the crowds delight, before passing out to McKnight. His long ball, was touched on by McCluskey whos direct run allowed him to pass by the keeper for the second of the night.
With 10 to go in the half, St Roch’s pulled off the play of the night. McCluskey picks up the ball, wide on the right, and passes a ball off to McMahon, his ball down the line sees Musa take on and beat his marker. The big striker composed himself on the edge of the box and crossed expertly to an unmarked McDonnell, whos overhead kick cruelly beats the keeper, but rebounds off the post to safety.
At half time, Mather replaces Haynes in nets, whilst Bryson an Maguire, replace Neossi and Simpson.
Not unlike the first half, the match was now more open but lacking in real chances. Substitute Maguire was unlucky after a deep run in midfeld, his shot from 35 yards was tipped over by the keeper.
The defence were changed again, as McKnight and McMahon were replaced by McWilliams and Mathieson, and the new look defence were to suffer the first goal conceded by the Candy all pre season. As the defence attempted to play a high offside, the substitute for BSC found himself onside, unmarked and free to run in and place past Mather.
The Roch weren’t to be undone however and regained their 2 goal lead, very soon after. McCluskey controls the ball on the outside of the box, a nice diagonal through ball, allows Musa to beat the keeper to the ball, round him and tap in. An the big Gambian, doubled his tally an finished the scoring, only 3 minutes later. Maguire was creator this time, as nice football made space to pass in the in form forward and he curls in a nice finish.
Summary : We came up against a very good young side, but players and management together, will be content at the quality of play and goals on the evening. Matching the energy and passion from the opposition on the night.
